About Big East
Big East is a textile manufacturing company supplying textile products such as uniform accessories, neckties, and gifts and premiums to both the corporate sector and educational establishments nationwide. Founded in 1993 as a sewing and embroidery factory servicing the education industry, it has grown over the years to service the government and corporate sector.
The Challenge
Having migrated several applications from an on-premise virtualised environment onto AWS cloud, Big East needed a partner to help manage their AWS cloud environment.
The goals Big East intended to achieve by out-sourcing the management of their cloud infrastructure included:
- Cost optimisation
- Increased visibility
- Improved security
- 24x7 monitoring
Discovery
We began the project by conducting discovery sessions with Big East. This set the foundation for the project, and allowed us to:
- Gain visibility into Big East’s existing cloud environment
- Understand Big East’s requirements, processes and policies
- Review and perform an architecture validation of the existing infrastructure design based on the five pillars of the AWS Well-Architected Framework
These findings, along with a proposed Remediation Plan, were presented to Big East in a Gap Analysis Report.
Onboarding
Once the project parameters were set, we proceeded with the onboarding process, which included the following:
- Setup, install and configure tooling required for MSP services
- Perform any approved remediation works as identified in the Gap Analysis Report
- Conduct meetings and/or workshops (where necessary) to ensure all parties are familiar with the Cloud Managed Services processes, which may include, but is not limited to, raising service requests, incident management, etc.
Operations & Support
A key aspect of the project was for us to provide operational support and technical administration services to help Big East manage, maintain, and support their Cloud environment as part of ‘business-as-usual’ (BAU) operations. These services include:
- Monitoring and event management
- Service request and change management
- Incident management
- Patch and continuity management
Optimisation & Advisory
Our team provides consultative services to Big East in the capacity as a Cloud Subject Matter Expert (SME). Among the services covered are:
- Track, analyse and recommend on platform usage and cost optimisation
- Right-sizing opportunities based on historical usage patterns
- Reserved Instance subscriptions based on historical usage patterns
- Architectural design improvements with the aim of improving efficiency/throughput and/or reducing costs
- New AWS services or third party tooling with the aim of improving efficiency/throughput and/or reducing costs
We also provide Big East with regular reports covering the following:
- Key metrics on operational activities
- Events, incidents and their respective impact
- Recommendations to optimise platform usage and cost
- Recommendations on infrastructure improvements
- AWS consumption breakdown by groups/categories such as Business Units, etc.

Optimised Infrastructure
By leveraging on AWS Trusted Advisor, custom scripts on AWS Lambda, and Amazon EC2 Reserved Instances, we optimised Big East’s IT infrastructure by right-sizing compute instances and automating operational tasks. Outsourcing their cloud managed services also allowed Big East to keep operational costs optimised while benefiting from our expertise and experience in AWS.

With reduced operational tasks, Big East’s IT team are now able to focus their time and effort on higher value tasks with direct impact on growing their business. Their applications running on AWS are also more stable and scalable, resulting in improved service uptime and reliability.
